National Workshop on Culture, Heritage and Religious Cities under the PEARL Programme

A National Workshop on Culture, Heritage and Religious Cities under the PEARL Programme was organized at Madurai on 2nd February 2009.

The workshop was organised by National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), Center for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT), Madurai Municipal Corporation and supported by Mission Directorate JNNURM, Ministry of Urban Development, Govt. of India.

The workshop witnessed participation from Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), Amritsar Nagar Nigam, Varanasi Nagar Nigam, Pondicherry Municipal Corporation, Allahabad Municipal Corporation, Puri Municipality, Mysore Municipality, JnNURM- technical cell and NIUA. Various other Organisations like ICLEI, CISCO, Dhan Foundation, INTACT-Pondicherry, UNESCO-IHCN also attended the workshop. Knowledge Managers from CMA MP and CEPT Ahmedabad were present at the occasion. Participants from the Madurai Municipal Corporation included the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Commissioner and other Superintending Engineers. Mrs. TMT G. Thenmozhi Gopinathan, Mayor, Madurai chaired the workshop. 

The main objective of the national workshop was to share and discuss various initiatives being taken under the 15 identified JNNURM Cities falling under the "D" Group of Culture, Heritage and Religious Cities under PEARL. Key issues at the ULBs level that included lack of linkage between urban planning and heritage development; lack of comprehensive guidelines and clear road map for action to protect the heritage cities were discussed. Absence of experience sharing platforms or on-line supports; model urban plans with building by-laws sensitive to heritage issues and so on were other intervention areas of the workshop. Thematic areas that have been identified are heritage and conservation, religion and water front cities, tourism, social amenities and urban infrastructure, existing and possible guidelines. 

The workshop ended with vote of thanks from the chair.
